The informal sector in Africa continues to play a prominent role in poverty mitigation, employment generation, creation of a stimulating effect on the formal economy, and acting as the ‘last resort’ during periods of economic recession and financial crisis.
However, the lack of regulation, transparency, and accountability in the informal economy often exposes the issues of underdevelopment, tax evasion, labor exploitation, and inadequate consumer protection.
This is why Joshua K Salawu and Gabriel Rufyiri, two friends concerned by the issue of corruption, labor exploitation, and underdevelopment, joined forces. They refined the existing Olucome project and defined a methodology to meet the current needs of public authorities and their citizens.
